Doctor Who: The Impossible Astronaut
The Doctor invites the people he trusts most in the world to watch him die.
First and foremost I want to pay tribute to Elisabeth Sladen who recently passed away. She’s made a significant contribution to Doctor Who; she will be missed.
Now, ‘The Impossible Astronaut’! Sorry it’s a bit late. I’ve been negligent!
This episode started out with a bang for me and I loved it the whole way through. I was hoping for a little continuity with the Christmas episode but it’s all good. We see Amy, Rory and River Song summoned to meet the Doctor in the USA. I initially was disappointed to see River Song, I’m not a huge fan of the character, but I really enjoyed her in this episode! Is it just me or is the Doctor with a Stetson and a bow tie is just awesome?
The scene on the beach was epic. As soon as I saw that astronaut come out of the lake I was immediately thinking about the ‘Silence in the Library’ and was dying to know if there was any connection. Despite what happened to the Doctor, I personally really enjoyed how all the different characters reacted to his untimely demise. Surprisingly, Rory was cool under pressure while I think Amy had a bit of a meltdown; River Song took charge as expected.
A bit of time jumbling and we’ve got the Doctor back, albeit 200 years younger! I really enjoyed Matt Smith’s portrayal of the Doctor. He was good last season but I loved how he went from crazy-manic-ADHD to dead serious and severe; I’m really buying this version of the Doctor. I think the severe side is very important and I think Matt Smith pulled it off brilliantly!
I’m also loving these new aliens (I am not sure what they’re called - feel free to correct me)! These guys are more scary to me than the Weeping Angels by far. You turn away from them and instantly forget them. Just the way the aliens crept about and we knew where they are, I felt like I was in one of those old horror movies where I am yelling “look behind you!”
Again, I hate to say it, but I liked River Song and all the little hints she dropped. It was interesting to hear her say that she and the Doctor are progressing through time in reverse of each other and that eventually the Doctor wouldn’t know who she was. But I was fairly confident that in “Silence in the Library” the Doctor hadn’t a clue who she was, so maybe I just need to think about that a bit more.
Apparently Amy is pregnant, as she informed the Doctor, but I’m not entirely confident that there isn’t something strange going on. Both Amy and River Song became ill after seeing the aliens, but Rory did not. I think there’s something to that.
Anyway, next week’s episode looks to be just as intriguing as this (Amy shooting a child, aliens and we must get to that lunar landing) . If this is what Moffat’s got lined up for this season, we could be in for quite the ride!
Would love to hear from you what you thought of the episode and any predictions!
Until next week!
