Stargate Universe: Common Descent
The crew of the Destiny meets their own descendants.
“Stargate Universe” hasn’t forgotten the duplicate crew that went through the stargate in an attempt to get to Earth but ended up somewhere else. It seems time travel struck them again and left them on a planet centuries before they left Destiny.
With the drones still managing to track Destiny, the crew jettison the drone they had been holding in the hopes that it was the cause of the trace. Destiny prompts them to drop out of hyperspace at a nearby planet and with resources running low Young decides to take the risk of being found by the drones again. On the planet they encounter a group of humans who recognize them and claim to be their descendants. After bonding with the crew and helping them find all the supplies they need, the group requests transport back to their home planet. Rush is against the idea, pointing out they will use all the resources that were just collected but the people are worried because they’ve been unable to dial the gate on their home world. When the drones return Young has no choice but to allow them onboard and start on a journey to their planet. Of course when they arrive the planet is not at all how they remembered it.
Admittedly I was a little surprised to see the return of our duplicate Destiny crew so soon but they seem to be a major focus in this second half of the season. They give us an idea of what could have happened to the crew of Destiny in a completely different reality and that is interesting to look at.
Apparently the drones have continued to track Destiny since their encounter with the ship and don’t appear to be giving up anytime soon. I’d like to know a bit more about these drones and what the war they were built for was like. We know nothing about their creators or the people they were fighting or why such a desperate measure as building drones that would destroy all alien technology they found was undertaken. With only three episodes left to air after this one though I’m not convinced we’ll ever be finding out the answers to these questions.
Kino videos made by the other crew of Destiny give insights into their life and what it was like to start over with almost none of the technology you’d grown used to. It’s good to see the Destiny crew finally make a connection with another group of people living in this galaxy. Most of the aliens they’ve met so far have been against them in one way or another or have ended up dead. Even if these people aren’t really aliens at all, I’m sure everyone on board Destiny could benefit from having some allies around. Of course with their planet destroyed there’s no guarantee they’ll be a lot of help against some of the more destructive aliens flying around out there.
Next week’s episode will carry on the story of these descendants of Destiny’s duplicate crew and their interactions with the current crew hopefully showing us more about how they became the civilization they were on their now unliveable planet.
